The 7, 8 and X iPhones cannot read NFC Tags natively. This means that while these generation of iPhones technically can read NFC tags, they can’t do it out of the box. Apple recently updated the iOS software so that the current XS, XS Max and XR iPhones can scan NFC tags with or without an additional App. It is possible that at some point in the future built-in tag scanning will be available on the 7,8 or X. However, right now, you need to get an App.
If you do have one of the latest generation XS, XS Max or XR iPhones, then to scan an NFC tag all you need to do is hold the phone near an encoded NFC tag. It’s as simple as that!
If you don’t have the XS, XS Max or XR, then to read NFC tags, you need to have installed iOS 11 or later and will need an App. NFC tag scanning with an App is only available on the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X. If you have an older iPhone, unfortunately you do not have the technical ability to read NFC tags.
